Well, let me start by saying this book is definitely not for everyone. I read all the reviews and after judging the pros and cons, decided to to give it a try. I think most will either love or hate it, but knowing what it's really about will help determine if this book is for you... Please be aware that this story contains some highly disturbing content. There are rape scenes, and the villain is basically a sadist who enjoys torture, or any other sick perversion there is to be had. I was prepared for this so it didn't catch me unawares. This story is NOT a funny, quirky, light-hearted romance. Instead it's what I call a heavy historical with serious subject matter that pulls at your heart and touches your soul.

Judith has been abused in pretty much every way imaginable, and feels unworthy of love or anything at all good. She's lost all sense of self, has a distrust of men, and is a lost and lonely being. Alisdair is a survivor of the Battle at Culloden and the new laird of Clan MacLeod. And it is Alisdair who will teach Judith how to go on living, loving, and forgiving oneself.

I adored both Judith and Alisdair; she for her strength and heart, and he for his patience and tenderness. The chemistry between them was beautifully written and I not only cried while reading this, but amazingly enough I even laughed on occasion too. The love between this couple was just so sweet, lovely, and rare. It's not only a tale that will stick with you long after you finish the last page, but one that is emotionally engaging and truly unforgettable. Simply a remarkably memorable story of true, everlasting love and redemption and one of the best historical romances I've honestly ever read. I'd highly recommend this hauntingly beautiful love story and will gladly re-read it again and again...

A Promise Of Love Lovegram Romance Karen Ranney 9780821757505 Books Reviews

another great novel that i kept myself glued to, very exciting and thrilling
My first book to read by this author. The story moved slowly, and I began skimming pages. I had hoped to find another writer of Scottish fiction.
I do not recommend this book.
This was the first novel I've read by Karen Ranney and I was happily surprised! This book is filled with abuse and fear, but the love of a clan and the love of a widowed laird, brings happy endings for the main characters. Truly a wonderful read where the heroine learns the true meaning of forgiveness, acceptance, and mind-blowing love!
This story is better than five stars, if I could I would give it ten! The way alisdair helped Judith find herself and how to love and be loved is a thing of beauty. Also, the way the clan was always there for each other. Finally, the history is rich in this story.
Judith Cuthertson Willoughly had come back home after her second marriage even though she knew she was not welcome. Her father tried to hit her with his fist this sets the stage of what kind of life she has led up to now. He sold her for 100 sheep for her third marriage to Alisdair MacLeod a Scot. His clan was in a dire financial situation. They neither another marriage plus him having to marry a English woman. The book has moments that may disturb readers it is a dark book. Judith had been beaten, sexually assaulted by her husband and shared with other men. Is their a chance that she and her new husband can find love or is her life just a repeat of what she lived with before. I liked the book but is not for people who like a lighter romance .
In starting this book I was not expecting too much as the synopsis was rather blah, however! This was a terrific read. If you are expecting the typical romance, all hearts and flowers, this book is not for you. The setting is Scotland after Culloden and shows the terrible times the people of Scotland suffered though after the battle where so many died. The slow developing relationship between the main characters was wonderful to read. The
terrible things that Judith endured were not written for sensationalism, but to show her strength to over come what she had done to her. For me, this was a wonderful find and I am so glad I ordered it.
I'm fairly new to Ranney's work, but I have read a few. This is the best one I have read so far, and they've all been good. I read 2 to 3 books a week, and give a lot of 3 and 4 stars, but not many 5s. She always shows her facility with words, but she has outshone herself here. A truly sympathetic heroine, a hero who is not only deliciously handsome, but also kind and patient under very difficult conditions, and a setting (a ravaged Scotland just after Culloden) that is by no stretch of the imagination a fairyland. These are not wealthy misses whose biggest worry is becoming the latest on dit in a ballroom or a hero who fighting to stay away from parson's mousetrap. There is nothing wrong with either of those literary devices, they are just overused. In this book, we see the other side of the story. While the folks down south were feteing Cumberland's soldiers while dancing English country dances, thousands of innocent Scots women, children, and other noncombattants were dropping dead from starvation and exposure because their crops and houses had been burned and their livestock stolen. The closest we here in America have to the devastation they faced is Sherman's March to the Sea, and even that isn't apt, since Sherman only cut a swath and had given strict orders how people were to be treated. For the English, it was total war. The entire country was razed, and the order was given to terrorize the population, no matter who they were. (Unless you followed one of the clan chiefs who toadied to the English).

One of the other outstanding features of this novel was how Ranney dealt with the sex scenes. As appropriate for the heroine's past, and the hero's situation, the love scenes were handled gently and somewhat circumspectly. They are not "hot and sweaty " but it is clear what they are doing. I was quite relieved by this, because if they had been, it would have ruined the tone of the whole book.

In all, this book would place in the top 5 of my most satisfying romance reads, and I figure I have read about 200. For fans of romances that exhibit skillful and complex writing, this is a winner. (Some of my other favorite writers are Katherine Ashe, Meredith Duran, Elizabeth Boyle, Sarah McLean, and Kat Martin if that's helpful).
