I honestly had a very slow time getting into this one initially. I've picked it up and put it down probably 5 or 6 times over the past 6 months, but finally decided to try the audiobook and ended up diving in and finishing it in less than 48 hours LOL. Seriously it's amazing what a good narrator can do for pulling me into a story, though I almost wonder if it was the original serial format not quite translating right into a full "novel" perhaps that slowed me down? Not sure, but definitely diving straight into the sequel without any problems LOL.In any case, I loved the twist on fairy tales affecting the real world at large in an almost Men in Black meets Leverage sort of way. Plus bonus the stories here are every bit as dark and often gruesome as the original folk tales, and it just works so so well that way. So yeah, definitely a book (and likely duology once I finish the sequel LOL) that I would recommend to anyone who likes twisted fairy tales :)

I originally picked this up on audio on a lark because I'd just finished one of the author's other books. After listening, I grabbed it on as well because I knew it was going to end up in my go-to book list.
This is a story about fairy tales. Fairy tales, you see, are real...and they want to manifest in the real, modern world. The downside to that is that they inevitably leave blood and destruction in their wake. For example when a 'Sleeping Beauty' goes to sleep, she has a tendency to take those around her along for the ride. There is, of course, a government agency that exists for the sole purpose of negating these threats, and our protagonists are a field team of these agents.
I really enjoyed this take on the fairy tale idea. The characters are interesting, the old tales that the author chooses to weave into the book can get very old-school (Brothers Grimm didn't start out with fluffy bunnies, remember), and I was very definitely left happy with the story and wanting to see more.
One quick note This is about fairy tales, but it's definitely not written for kidlets. Highly recommended for adults, though!
The idea of the book is so over the top it makes for a quite interesting plot actually, fairy tales are real.. no surprise there, they are also evil puppet masters which drive humans to ruin and suffering or close enough anyway. Our heroine and her team are basically the magical cleanup crew trying to stop or at least minimize the disasters caused by fairytales being realized. Fun concept but gets really confusing down the line, basically there are not enough clear rules about how the magic and fairy tales actually function for the world and story to be truly consistent. Still an interesting read, worth checking out.
I thought that the idea behind Indexing was pretty fun. Fairytales keep trying to creep into real life and force normal people into the classic roles Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Evil Stepsister... with often deadly consequences. Protecting the world is a hidden government agency that works to keep the fairy tales from taking root and, if possible, saving the people cast in those "roles". But something is happening to increase the number of incursions way past the norm and to twist the old tales in more deadly ways. I liked the leads, a "Snow White" who has managed to keep her tale from commencing (despite the fact that she attracts suicidal blue birds to her window and flowers grow from her carpet) and a homicidal "Step Sister" who is surly, snarky, and mostly antisocial but who has kept her own story from reaching a deadly conclusion for a really really long time.
I liked seeing how they, and their team, dealt with the different fairy tales that kept trying to insert themselves into our world and I thought that the final ending was a good one. Indexing was originally released as a serial but it's complete now and I did the first half in audio and finished up on . As to the audio, I like the reader she also does the October Daye books, though I wasn't as wild about the voices for the two males in this direct supporting cast as I have been about those in the other books.
Still, a fun change of pace.
Another great story from Seanan McGuire
It is a very fun concept - I have a huge interest in archetypes and how they affect people, how we integrate them into our lives and how - without realizing it - they drive our responses. Ms. Mcguire takes fairy tales, a classic base for archetypes, and says "What If?" What if fairy tales pick people to be their vehicles, so their story can be told? How would this affect our world? What would the government do, did they know of it? They would create the ATI (The Aarne-Thompson Index Management Bureau) to police the phenomenon and the people affected by it.
I'd rate a little higher but I'm not a fan of the Serial narrative in which a larger story is strung out over a series of short stories. Because Indexing isn't really a short story collection, but more of a story told in vignettes. Ms. McGuire is such a damned fine writer that she makes the style work but it does give a little repetition as she has to reestablish some of the core things about characters and world in each vignette. Still, all together a darned good read with excellent writing, great characterization that explores what makes us 'us' - nature (or external powerful forces) or self-nurture (what we demand of ourselves and how we fight our influences and impulses (or give in to them)), and an interesting take on archetypal concepts.
I would, without hesitation, recommend this story to others to read. I might even suggest I would pester people who like archetype-focused urban fantasy to do so.
