Good romance development, plot, & adventure! Liked conversations, interactions, secondary characters, villains, flashbacks ! Couldn't put it down! Only criticism is, wish heroine had been a virgin widow instead of almost a virgin , prefer story lines where heroine is intimate only with the hero, makes an enchanting fantasy!

I just finished By Possession earlier today and I`m still breathless - and I feel a little empty after having been on one of the most amazing HR trips I`ve ever been on.
I`d already read a few of Madeline Hunter`s books, among them an amazing short story in the book Tapestry and one of the other books in Madeline Hunter`s mediaval series By Arrangement so I came to this book with very high expectations.
Usually books can`t live up to high expectations but By Possession surpassed them. I am still in a state of bliss and can hardly collect my thoughts to write a decent review but I`ll try.
Moira and Addis have known each other since they were children but they were from very different classes. Where Moira was serf born, Addis was the son of a baron. When the story begins Addis has just returned from years as a slave after having been taken prisoner in the Baltics where he was a crusader. He meets Moira and slowly but surely their back history is revealed while Addis tries to bind Moira to him and Moira tries to keep him at a distance so she can avoid being perceived as the baron`s whore.
Both Addis and Moira are very interesting characters and one couldn`t help feeling for both of them - born into a system where they just don`t have a chance as a couple. Addis was dark and scared on soul and body and Moira was smart and gentle but also had very strong principles.
The historical setting made this book even more interesting and I found myself googling the historical characters to learn more about them. Madeline Hunter seems to know the period of time she writes about and one really felt thrown back to the 14th century what with all the little details.
Madeline Hunter`s writing is always good. She never exaggerates or creates cheap emotional points - which, of course, makes the stories and the characters come out even more.
I can only recommend this book. It will take your breath away.
Now I want to read the last book in Madeline Hunter`s Mediaval series.
This Medieval novel set in the 1300's has a rich, dark quality to it. It started off a bit slow, but by the half way point I was totally engrossed in the relationship between Moira and Addis. There were a lot of historical details of the time period and much of the story centered around political maneuvering and greed. I enjoyed how unpredictable the plot was and that I didn't know what would happen next. The tone of the book could get depressing at times. There was no humor to lighten things up, but I am guessing there was not much to laugh about in Medieval times. I found that I was very emotionally invested at the conclusion of the book and that the love shared between Moira and Addis was some of the deepest and most poignant I have experienced.
This was my first by Madeline Hunter and I have since purchased all in her 14th Century London series (see list below). It is an amazing romance...great historical setting, very detailed characters, realistic dialog for the period and a wonderful heartrending story of love that overcomes many obstacles.
Set in the time of King Edward II, it is the story of Addis de Valence, a high born nobleman and knight, and Moira Falkner, the daughter of a nobleman's mistress and a bondwoman to Valence, though she claims her mother's lover freed her. She has secretly loved Addis since she was 12 and always seemed to be there when he needed care or comforting, though he was promised to the high born Claire, Moira's friend. Addis married Claire, who was vain and selfish and deserted Addis when he was sorely wounded and it was thought he'd never walk again. Now back from years in captivity in the Baltic, where he was taken in the Crusades as a slave, he fights to regain his rightful place all the while wanting Moira by his side and without benefit of marriage. But she will not go the path of her mother.
You will love this story. I couldn't put it down and it's worth a re-read! Here's the 14th Century London series in chronological order (the order in which the stories take place, NOT publication order)
By Possession
By Design
Stealing Heaven
By Arrangement
The Protector
Lord of a Thousand Nights
This is part of a trilogy that takes place over a period of years during the turmoil surrounding the Despenser Wars in Great Britain in the early 1300s. The other books are By Arrangement and By Design. By Possession features a knight returned from the Baltic Crusades and the dead. Through skillful insertions of flashback and dreams we piece together his history and the relationship he had to the heroine, a beautiful commoner, who was his late wife's most trusted friend. Madeline Hunter always delivers the elements of Romance that romance readers expect, but she also weaves and compelling and interesting plot with fully dimensional human characters. Experience has taught both hero and heroine to question what they were taught as youngsters. The conflict between them arises not just from the circumstances of the plot, but from this questioning. One doesn't need to know the history in order to enjoy the book, but you may find yourself reading up on the subject nonetheless.
