Our daughter loved this as a child so when we bought it for our grandson both she and I were surprised to find that threats of spanking played a role in the otherwise charming story. Neither of us had remembered that. Since spanking is not part of our grandson 's discipline (we use time outs) and in fact she would have to explain the word to him - that spanking means getting hit if you don't obey - she skips that part. We'll have to check out the other Frances books before we by them now.

I have not read this book since my son was little. He is now 28 yrs old. I do not remember anything about the spanking part. All I remember is that this was his favorite bedtime story, and I read it nightly at his request. Therefore, I doubt he found it scary or found the spanking part upsetting. I just repurchased it for the second time with several other classics for a young friend that is soon to have a baby and was shocked at those that gave this book negative reviews.
This a a classic book I remembered from my childhood and I wanted it for my 21 month old daughter who had outgrown/gotten bored with her current set of books. I was surprised there was a reference to a "spanking" so I just took a black sharpie and blacked out two lines on two separate pages. Simple fix! The story is adorable and my daughter loves it especially the page where Frances gets a piggy back ride- it makes her crack up. For those deeply offended by the spanking reference; it is an old book just use a sharpie and all is good. Happy reading!

My granddaughter loves the original Frances books that her mother loved. She wanted all the Frances books and we did not have this one. It is a treasure and we have one more to add to our collection. Good books never go out of style and can be past down to generations.
A classic! and the perfect complement to Bread and Jam for Frances. I read these to my children and I’m reading them now to their children. These badgers know a thing or two about the timeless wiles and ways of kids k-3. Beautiful illustrations are never cloying or patronizing. They’re just right!
Another great book in the Frances series!!! This one had our family of 5 laughing yet again at Frances and her antics. We thought one part was so cute and funny that Myself, my husband and my 9, 6, and 4 year old daughers had laughed so hard, we had to read it over again to get back to the story. LOVE this series and this one follows suit with the all around good books they are!
Great story! It helps to explain what all those things are that children fear at bedtime, causing them to struggle to get to bed and to sleep! My children love it and have requested this book to be read many many times over the years! I'm sure you and your children will enjoy it as much as we do! (I suggest buying a few of these books! I've had to go back and purchase it several times for friends who have requested it from me!)
